Big Panda: A Chic Display Font for Modern Branding

I was recently working on a branding project for a small handmade soap shop, and I needed a font that felt both approachable and unique. I had been testing a few display fonts when I stumbled upon Big Panda. The moment I saw it, I knew it had the right balance of casual charm and visual appeal to fit the brand’s personality.

What Makes Big Panda Stand Out

Big Panda is a display font with a playful yet refined aesthetic. It has soft curves, gentle serifs, and a slightly rounded appearance that gives it a friendly and modern feel. Unlike more rigid or overly decorative typefaces, this one feels like it was designed with real-life applications in mind—whether it's for a logo, packaging, or social media content.

The font carries a mood that's easygoing but still professional. It doesn't scream for attention, but it does stand out just enough to make a statement. That makes it perfect for brands that want to feel personable without losing their edge.

Testing Big Panda in Real Projects

I tested Big Panda across several elements of the soap shop's brand identity. On the logo draft, it looked great as the primary text. It didn’t overpower the imagery but gave the logo a warm, inviting touch. When I used it on the packaging mockup, the font worked well on the label, especially when paired with a clean sans-serif for body text.

On the business cards, I found that Big Panda added a nice contrast against a minimalist layout. For the website header, it performed well at larger sizes but wasn’t suitable for long blocks of text. I also used it in a social media post where it paired nicely with an emoji and a short tagline—making the post feel more personal and engaging.

One thing I noticed was how it handled different weights. While it only comes in one style, its subtle variations in stroke thickness helped create depth in certain design contexts. It wasn’t too bold, so it never felt overwhelming, even in larger formats like posters or signage.

Where Big Panda Shines and Where It Might Fall Short

Big Panda excels as a display font, headline font, or accent font. It's not ideal for long-form content due to its stylized nature, which can affect readability at smaller sizes. If you're designing a brochure or a lengthy blog post, it might be better to use it sparingly or pair it with a more legible supporting typeface.

It’s also worth noting that Big Panda isn’t suited for formal corporate environments. Its casual tone would clash with the kind of professionalism required in legal documents, financial reports, or official communications. However, it fits perfectly in creative industries, lifestyle brands, or any project that needs a bit of character and warmth.

When it comes to font pairing, I found that Big Panda works best with a clean sans-serif like Helvetica Neue or a modern serif such as Playfair Display. This combination helps maintain visual harmony while allowing each font to serve its purpose—Big Panda for impact, and the other for clarity.

Practical Tips for Using Big Panda

If you’re considering using Big Panda in your next project, I recommend testing it in different sizes and color contrasts before finalizing any designs. It's important to ensure that it remains legible and maintains its intended personality across various platforms and mediums.

Also, don’t forget to check the commercial font licensing. Whether you're designing for a client, creating templates, or building a brand identity, making sure you have the right permissions is essential. Many premium fonts require specific licenses for web use, print-on-demand products, or digital assets.

Lastly, consider how Big Panda aligns with your brand’s voice. If your brand is all about being fun, creative, or community-driven, this font could be a great match. But if your brand leans toward minimalism or traditional aesthetics, you might want to explore alternatives that better reflect that tone.

Overall, Big Panda is a versatile and stylish display font that adds a touch of personality to any design. Whether you're working on a logo, social media content, or packaging, it brings a sense of warmth and modernity that’s hard to ignore. Just remember to use it wisely, and it’ll elevate your projects in ways you won’t expect.
